A rare find from the Connoisseur Collection, for those accustomed to the soft wooden palette of his more familiar Planner collection pieces this hutch by Paul McCobb may be a striking contrast. Standing at 7 feet tall, it embodies every bit of Mid Century design cornerstone its creator envisioned.
The polished Aluminum frame strikes a strong contrast to the rich colors here; its rigid angles at once defining the hutch. The cold brightness reflects a gleaming light from the window, while the soft Walnut lies warm to the touch. It is a love letter to the architectural influences designs of this era were putting to practice.
Matched Walnut grain runs along the faces of both the upper and lower drawers. It's not a screaming, in-your-face type of matched arrangement though. The wood patterning is understated and acts as an accentuation of the softer design elements, not needing to call attention to swirling burls or strong contrasts. The Sun has also given this Walnut a sun-kissed lightening in the way that only years and years of it's presence will do to one.
It is the pulls, patinated and worn from decades of use, that slyly offer their own character. Standing in stark difference to the defined geometry of the remainder, they work their elliptical magic in small bites, offering a playful visual interlude for the eyes and fingers.
The hutch is in two sections, with the lower half measuring 34" H x 18 W and the upper half at 50" H x 13" W. The upper section only sits on top, and there is no through-hardware.
