Despite being a 20th century production of an older style, this secretary desk did not cast fine workmanship and refined elegance aside during the transition into the machine age. Hints of renaissance Italy are evoked by the crosshatch inlay pattern and golden tint, but the convenient size and shape make it a useful desk for modern urban living, able to fit into any corner of the home and conceal your work mess for the guests.
Marquetry is the art of using wood veneer to create patterns or images, much like the wood version of Mosaics. This piece is a postwar model (probably in the 50s) produced in Italy; the knowledge and skillset necessary to perform complex inlay work on curved surfaces is not in abundance everywhere, and still needed to be performed by hand by skilled workers.
Behind the door to the secretary is enough surface space for most laptops, one small cubby, and four drawers.
