Restored Victorian Walnut Bureau with Floating Mirror, by Johnson Furniture Co. of Michigan

Those who have been following us know that while we focus on mid century modern furniture, our eyes do stray from time to time towards beautiful objects from any era or style, and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to work on this walnut bureau. It exudes the old-world charm, stately feminine elegance, and the lush warmth of a decadent Victorian manor, discarding the shabby and keeping the chic, so to speak.

Luxurious (but not gaudy) ornamentation strikes the eye in the form of carvings, detailed inlay work on the door faces, burl wood veneer. There are three large drawers in all.

Based on construction and materials, the vanity likely hails from the 30s or 40s before Johnson Furniture Co. hired on the likes of Milo Baughman and Eliel Saarinen to usher them into modernity, yet it remains functional in the modern home either as bedroom vanity, office desk, or a hallway piece to add character and warm accents.

Restored to preserve the aged character and color of the original walnut. There is some wear and tear remaining, including most notably a series of scratches on the top left portion of the top drawer as pictured. We decided that to preserve the original appearance, it was best to leave this in place.
